UGC & Creator Marketing Glossary

A practical reference for creators, brands, agencies and ecommerce teams working with user-generated content, creator partnerships and social commerce. Terms can vary by platform and contract, so use this as an operating reference rather than legal advice.

Core creator terms

UGC (user-generated content)

Content that reflects a customer or creator perspective around a product, service or experience. In commercial creator work, “UGC” often refers to creator-produced brand content even when the creator is hired specifically to make it.

UGC creator

A creator who produces brand-ready content such as demonstrations, testimonials, tutorials, product photography, voiceovers or short-form videos. UGC creators may deliver content to the brand without posting it to their own audience.

Influencer / creator posting

Content published to a creator's own audience as part of the agreed campaign. This is different from content-only UGC because distribution through the creator's account is part of the deliverable.

Creator portfolio

A curated set of work that helps a brand evaluate creative ability, communication style, relevant categories, formats and production quality. See how to build a UGC portfolio.

Commercial terms

Creation fee

The amount paid for producing the agreed content. A creation fee does not automatically define paid usage, exclusivity, posting or raw-footage rights.

Usage rights

The agreed permission for a brand to use creator content. Usage should specify destinations, duration, territory and whether paid advertising is included. Read UGC Usage Rights Explained.

Organic usage

Permission for a brand to use content in non-paid owned channels covered by the agreement, such as organic social. The exact scope should still be written down.

Paid usage

Permission to use content in paid advertising. Paid usage can be priced and timed separately from creation.

Creator-handle / partnership ads

Advertising formats that use or connect to a creator's identity/account through platform-specific authorization, such as Meta partnership ads, TikTok Spark Ads, YouTube creator partnership formats or LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads where eligible.

Whitelisting

An older industry term often used for advertising through or with a creator account. Platform-specific names and controls are more precise, so define exactly what authorization is being requested.

Exclusivity

A restriction preventing a creator from working with certain competitors or categories for a defined period, market or scope.

Raw footage

Unedited source video or image files captured during production. Raw footage should be included only when agreed.

Revision

A requested change to an asset after delivery. Professional briefs should define how many revision rounds are included and distinguish creator error from a change in brand direction.

Campaign and creative terms

Brief

The working campaign document covering objective, audience, product facts, deliverables, format, claims, rights, deadlines, approvals and commercial terms. Brands can use the StartUGC Brand Campaign OS to organize the operating workflow behind a campaign.

Hook

The opening idea, line or visual designed to earn attention and establish why someone should keep watching.

Angle

The creative perspective used to communicate the product, such as problem-solution, demonstration, comparison, social proof or routine/lifestyle.

B-roll

Supplementary footage used to show the product, environment, process or proof while voiceover or other narrative continues.

CTA (call to action)

The action the viewer is asked to take, such as learn more, compare, shop, sign up or save.

Creative variant

A version of an asset with a different hook, edit, CTA, proof point or length, used for testing and repurposing.

Performance and measurement terms

CTR (click-through rate)

Clicks divided by impressions for a clickable placement.

CPA (cost per acquisition)

Campaign or media cost divided by the number of attributed acquisitions, based on the measurement model being used.

ROAS (return on ad spend)

Attributed revenue divided by advertising spend. ROAS does not include every business cost, so it should not be confused with profit.

Completion rate

The percentage of video starts or views that reach the defined completion point, depending on the platform metric.

Asset-level measurement

Tracking performance by specific creator, concept, hook and creative version instead of reporting only at campaign level. See the UGC Measurement Center.

Commerce and partnership terms

Affiliate commission

A percentage or fixed amount paid when tracked creator activity results in an eligible conversion under the agreed attribution rules.

Attribution window

The time after a tracked click or interaction during which a conversion can be credited under a program's rules.

Product seeding

Sending product to creators as part of outreach or a campaign. Gifting does not automatically create a content obligation unless the creator agrees to one.

Ambassador program

A longer-term creator relationship involving repeated content, promotion, affiliate activity or community participation under an ongoing structure.

Social commerce

Discovery and shopping experiences connected to social or creator content, including native shopping features, affiliate programs and platform-linked catalogs.

Compliance terms

Material connection

A relationship—such as payment, free product or affiliate compensation—that may affect how an audience evaluates an endorsement and can trigger disclosure requirements.

Disclosure

Clear communication to an audience that a material brand relationship exists. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and platform. Use the Creator Compliance Center for official resources.

StartUGC operating principle

The strongest creator programs separate four things clearly: what is being created, who distributes it, what commercial rights are granted, and how performance will be measured. When those layers are defined, creators and brands can collaborate with less friction.
